The Kartika varietals predominant in Bali Kintamani grow beneath tangerine, orange and other shade trees at elevations of 1.300 to 1.700 meter. It is planted atop a large volcanic highland plateau of Kintamani, between the volcanoes of Batukaru and Mount Agung, where farmers use the world-famous traditional collective farming system called Subak Abian. Subak Abian plays an important role both in agricultural activities as well as religious ones. It is founded on the Hindu philosophy of “Tri Hita Karana” meaning the three causes of happiness. The philosophy is all about the relation of the individual to God, relationship to others, and relationship to environment.
Bali prohibits the use of pesticides, and all fertilizers are 100% organic. The coffee is fully-washed processed, a technique that allows for greater development of character and rusticity more akin to neighbouring Sumatera and Sulawesi. Kintamani coffee is the first coffee of Indonesia awarded with Geographical Indication.
